While knocking about the Internet, I came upon an interesting page by Heather Rose Jones, documenting her experiments with recipes by Anthimus, the 6th century Byzantine who had so much to say about food. In particular, Ms. Jones's experiments with an apparently straightforward recipe for sweet and sour braised beef are fascinating. Perhaps I can adapt them for use with my crockpot.
